Point, Line, Plane Grammar

Definition

A formal theoretical system developed by Wassily Kandinsky at the Bauhaus that analyzes visual art as a semiotic and physical language constructed from atomic points, directional kinetic lines, and bounded planar tensions.

Key Characteristics

  • Point: The atomic, silent, non-dimensional foundation
  • Line: The dynamic trace left by a point set into kinetic motion by external force
  • Plane: The bounded material canvas having intrinsic structural weights and directional tensions

Applications

  • Vector graphic engines (SVG primitives: point, line, polygon, path)
  • Physics engines in creative coding (particles as points, vectors as lines, boundaries as planes)
  • Visual hierarchy and compositional layout in UI/UX and algorithmic generative art
